Leadership University
Need to add involvement to your resume? Looking to improve your leadership skills? Want to get involved without joining a student organization? Then Leadership University is the perfect program for you! Leadership University is a year- long (August 2011- April 2012) leadership series sponsored by the Northern Kentucky Leadership Institute. Students who participate in at least 8 session (45 minutes each) and complete at least 3 hours of any on or off campus community service will graduate from the program! Students will have over 60 sessions to choose from this semester. Sessions will be offered throughout the day and some evenings. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion and a honor cords to wear at graduation! Student Government is holding elections for five open Freshmen seats. Election packets will be made available on Monday, August 22nd through September 1st in the Student Government Office, SU 330. Interested in Sorority Recruitment?
This year recruitment registration will cut off before recruitment begins so if you are interested in rushing a sorority – register early and fully!
Meet Your Gamma Chi Night will be held on September 8 at 5pm in the Student Union Ballroom. At this event you will meet your Gamma Chi as well as other members of your Gamma Chi group. **This is the last day to register for recruitment and this is considered a MANDATORY event. If you have signed up for recruitment and cannot attend due to class, please contact your Gamma Chi (Greek Counselor) and let her know you have a class conflict! If you cannot reach your Gamma Chi or do not know who your Gamma Chi is email studentlife@nku.edu instead.
Sorority Recruitment weekend will take place September 9-12. You will need to be available on Friday from 3:30 PM to 10:00 PM; Saturday from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Sunday from 12:30 to 6:00 PM.

Attention Freshmen looking to make a difference at NKU!
Northern Kentucky Leadership Institute would like to invite all freshman students who are interested in leadership development and community service to join the Freshman Service Leadership Committee. This is a freshman-based student organization dedicated to the development of leadership through service. Through both the fall and spring semesters at NKU, FSLC members can be seen throughout campus. Whether it’s working fundraisers for one of their upcoming events or showing off their skills at NKU’s Service on Saturday, FSLC members are dedicated to giving back to the community. This organization plans monthly on and off campus community service events. This is also a great way to meet other students and to build your resume! Please join us at our welcome grill out on Wednesday, August 31from 3:30-5:00 at the Volleyball Pavilion. The first FSCL meeting will be Wednesday, September 7 at 2:00 pm in SU 104. First Student Organization Board Meeting
This is a friendly reminder that the first Student Organization Board meeting is on Thursday, September 8 at 12:15 in UC 375 (Ballroom). All organizations should send a representative to this meeting to gather important information for the year including student organization orientations, funding opportunities, and learn what is new in Student Life. Christian Student Fellowship invites you . . .
. . . to join us this semester as we explore the Christian faith through the lens of The Last Battle by C. S. Lewis, one of The Chronicles of Narnia. We will cover one chapter each week. If you can’t read along with us, fear not. We will have each chapter read aloud before we begin our study each week. It is a very pleasant experience. Norse to Nations
Norse to Nations is a international service organization which is devoted to service not just in the United States but across the world. We will be traveling to Guatemala this upcoming summer to help children in a children home. There will also be a labor project, which can include building a playground to painting. Ultimate Frisbee
The Ultimate Frisbee club is a competitive traveling team. If you are looking for sport that will keep you into shape but also have a ton of fun then this is the sport for you. We will be facing big name universities like Kentucky, Louisville, and possibly a few teams from Michigan. All skill levels are encourage to come out and play. Free Reproductive Health Services
Reproductive services including annual gynecologic exams, STI testing and birth control options are offered through Health, Counseling & Prevention Services by the Northern Kentucky Health Department on a bi-weekly basis. Appointments are necessary. Contact HCPS at (859) 572-5650.
Group Offerings for Fall 2011 - Health, Counseling and Prevention Services
Depression and You
This short-term co-ed group combines psycho-education and discussion for students who are feeling depressed. It will be most helpful for students who are or have been experiencing a depressed mood, as well as symptoms including fatigue, appetite disturbance, difficulty concentrating and interference in interpersonal relationships such as social withdrawal. Tuesdays from 2-4 pm.
Understanding You, Understanding Me
This ongoing co-ed relationship group focuses on understanding your interpersonal dynamics and how that impacts the quality of your relationships. Issues typically leading students to join this group include difficulties forming intimate and trusting relationships, self-esteem concerns, feeling lonely and disconnected from others, and a lack of positive relationships with friends, romantic partners, and/or family members. Mondays from 3- 4:30 pm
PREP (Personal Responsibility Educational Program)
This is a 3-week psycho-educational group focusing on alcohol and other substance use. It is intended to bring awareness to students about the effects of AOD (alcohol and other drugs) use on academic, personal, financial, social and legal areas of life. Day and Time TBA
CHOICES
CHOICES is a group for students who are concerned about their drug or alcohol use, who may have been told by others that it is a problem or may be noticing negative consequences of their substance use. The group will meet weekly and help students recognize the impact of their substance use on daily functioning, life goals, personal relationships and possible negative legal and financial consequences. Students will learn to identify their triggers, face their challenges and develop healthy coping skills. Day and Time TBA
Anxiety Buster Workshop
This is an hour and half workshop that will be offered both fall and spring semesters. The goal is to give participants tools for managing their anxiety associated with test taking, social interactions, perfectionism, and general life management issues. Student who experience all levels of anxiety in their lives are welcomed to attend. Thursday, 9/22/11 from 3-4:30 pm in UC 420B-RSVP to Tim Barron, LPCC, at barront1@nku.edu

Family Weekend!
NKU's Family Weekend is an annual event for families to spend quality time with their students while they experience all that Northern Kentucky University has to offer. In honor of the Ten Year anniversary of Newport on the Levee, the NKU Jazz department will be participating in a Weekend of Jazz, starting Friday, September 16th at 5pm! Come celebrate the Levee's 10th birthday with a weekend of great music from NKU's finest musicians! Scheduled appearances include the NKU Latin Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo 1, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, NKU Big Band, and the Northern Lights Jazztet. Healthy Monday: Let’s Talk!
The Wellness Center and the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement are bringing the “Healthy Monday: Let’s Talk” initiative back for the fall semester. “Healthy Monday: Let’s Talk” utilizes the Democracy Square whiteboard in the Steely Library atrium to stimulate campus discussion. Every Monday, the question will center on obesity, with the goal of engaging public dialogue and feedback on a number of influencing factors and proposed strategies to address this growing concern. They are located throughout campus to enable you to give your cell phone a ‘jump’ to get through the day. The 2nd Annual Race/Walk for Global Water takes place Saturday September 17, 2011. The Race/Walk takes place on Groh Lane at the Fairfield Water Works Park in Fairfield, Ohio 45014. All proceeds will be donated to Water For People.
Volunteers are needed for several tasks which range from set-up, registration, food service, course guides to cleanup. The hours for which volunteers are needed range from 06:00am till about 2:00pm.
